209. Examples of the use of these pronouns.
1st. Of ആര. Masculine and Feminine Gender of both numbers.
ആര പൊയി?
Who went?
അത ആരുടെ കുതിര?
Whose horse is that?
ഞാൻ ആരുടെ അടുക്കൽ പൊകും?
To whom shall I go?
ഞാൻ ആൎക്ക ഇത കൊടുക്കെണം?
To whom must I give this?
താൻ ആരെ കുറിച്ച സംസാരിച്ചു?
Whom did you speak of?
അവൻ ആരൊട അത വാങ്ങിച്ചു?
From whom did he obtain that?
2nd. എത is seldom declined; it stands alone or is prefixed to other words; as,
എത പശു നല്ലത.
Which cow is best?
എത വലിയത ഇതൊ അതൊ?
Which is greater this, or that?
എത സ്ഥലത്ത താൻ പൊകുന്നു?
To what place are you going.
ൟ തടി എത ആന വലിച്ചു?
Which Elephant drew this timber?
എവൻ, &c., are placed in sentences thus,
ഇവരിരുവരിൽ എവൻ നല്ലവനാകുന്നു?
Who is the best of these two (men.)
എവൾ ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു?
Who was she who thus spake?
3rd.എന്ത, is placed in sentences before the verb, or after nouns and pronouns; as,
അതിന്ന ഞങ്ങൾക്ക എന്ത?
What is that to us?
ഞങ്ങൾ എന്ത ചെയ്യെണ്ടു?
What shall we do?
ഇത എന്ത എന്ന അവൻ ചൊദിച്ചു.
What is this, he asked?
അവർ എന്തിനായിട്ട വന്നു?
For what did they come?
എന്തിനെ കുറിച്ച താൻ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു?
What are you talking about?
നീ പറഞ്ഞത എന്ത?
What was that you said?
എന്ത, is sometimes prefixed to nouns, in which case, ഒരു is usually inserted between എന്ത and the noun. In this connexion it corresponds to our phrases, what kind, what sort; as,
ഇവർ എന്തൊരു മനുഷ്യൻ ആകുന്നു?
What kind of a man is this?
ൟ കാൎയ്യത്തിന എന്തൊരു ദൊഷമുള്ളു?
What evil is there in this thing?
ൟ തുവൽ എന്തൊരു പക്ഷിയുടെതാകുന്നു?
From what sort of a bird does this feather come?
എന്തൊരു ദൊഷത്താൽ ഇനിക്കു ഇത വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു?
In consequence of what sin has this happened to me?
When എങ്കിലും or ആലും is affixed to ആർ or എത, and the following verb is put in the past tense with ആൽ they correspond to our words whoever, whichever; as,
ആര എങ്കിലും ഇവിടെ വന്നാൽ അടി കൊള്ളും.
Whoever may come here will be beaten.
ആരായാലും വെല ചെയ്താൽ അവന്ന കൂലി കിട്ടും.
Whoever may work will get wages.
ആൎക്ക എങ്കിലും ആപത്ത വന്നാൽ ഞാൻ അവന്ന സഹായിക്കും.
To whomsoever distress may come, I will assist him.
ൟ ആനകളിൽ എത എങ്കിലും ആ കാട്ടിൽ പൊയാൽ ചത്തുപൊകും.
Whichever of those Elephants go into that Jungle he will die.
എന്ത followed by a verb with ആലും affixed, corresponds to whatever; as,
താൻ എന്ത പറഞ്ഞാലും ഞാൻ അവിടെ പൊകും.
Whatever you may say, I will go there.
The construction of these Malayalim sentences sometimes varies a little; as,
ഇപ്രകാരം ചെയ്തവൻ ആര എങ്കിലും നല്ലവനല്ല.
Whoever he was that did this, is not good.
ഇനിക്ക, ശത്രുവായിട്ടുള്ളവൻ എവൻ എങ്കിലും എന്നൊട ഇത ചെയ്തു.
Whoever it was that did this to me, is my enemy.
ഇനിക്ക പ്രിയമുള്ളവന്ന എവന്ന എങ്കിലും ഞാൻ അത കൊടുക്കുന്നു.
I give it to whomsoever I like.
