084 DATIVE CASE.

145. This case in Malayalim is used thus,
1st. To express the object to which the action is directed; and when in this sense the dative follows the accusative case of a noun, or verbs implying purpose or design, വെണ്ടി or ആയിട്ട is often affixed to the dative; as,
അവൻ അവരുടെ വെലെക്ക അവരെ ഒരുക്കി.
He prepared them for their work.
അവൻ പറഞ്ഞ പ്രകാരം നിനക്ക വെണ്ടി അത ചെയ്തു.
He did it for you according to his word.
ഞാൻ നിന്റെ ഗുണത്തിനായിട്ട ഇവിടെ വന്നു.
I came here for your benefit.
അവൎക്കായിട്ട അവൻ ഇത ചെയ്തു.
He did this on their behalf.
ൟ കാൎയ്യം ചെയ്താൽ നിനക്കും ഇനിക്കും ഉപകാരമായിട്ട തീരും.
If you do this thing it will turn out for our mutual benefit.
2nd. Words signifying pleasure, displeasure, need, danger, equality,suitability, benefit, opposition, nearness, passions of the mind, or the bodily senses, require a dative; as,
ഇത ഇനിക്ക ഇമ്പമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.
This is pleasant to me.
ആ കാൎയ്യം അവൎക്ക ഇഷ്ടകെടുള്ളതായിരുന്നു.
That affair was displeasing to them.
അവൎക്ക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടവരികയില്ല.
They will not need.
അത അവന്ന ആവശ്യമുള്ളതല്ല.
That is not necessary for him.
നിനക്ക ആപത്ത സമീപമായിരിക്കുന്നു.
You are exposed to danger, or danger is near you.
അത ഇതിന്ന or ഇതിനൊട ശരിയാകുന്നു.
That is equal to this.
ആഭരണങ്ങൾ ൟ സ്ത്രീക്ക നല്ല ചെൎച്ചയുള്ളവ ആകുന്നു.
Ornaments are very suitable to this woman.
അവൻ ഇനിക്ക ഉപകാരം ചെയ്തു.
He conferred a benefit upon me.
അവൻ അവൎക്ക വിരൊധമായിട്ട നിന്നു.
He stood in opposition to them.
ജനങ്ങൾ അവന്ന, or അവന്റെ ചുറ്റും നിന്നു.
The people stood about him.
എന്റെ മരണത്തിന്ന കാലം അടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
The time of my death is near.
അവൻ അവൎക്ക or അവരൊട കൃപ ചെയ്തു.
He acted with mercy to them.
ആൎക്കെങ്കിലും ദ്വെഷ്യം യൊഗ്യമുള്ളതല്ല.
Hatred becomes no one.
അത ചെയ്വാൻ അവന്ന മനസ്സില്ല.
He is not willing to do that.
ആ കാൎയ്യത്തിന്ന അവൻ ചെവി കൊടുത്തില്ല.
He did not pay attention to that business.
ൟ കാഴ്ച എന്റെ കണ്ണുകൾക്ക വെറുപ്പ തന്നെ.
This sight is an abomination in my eyes.
ഇനിക്ക ഇതിൽ രസമില്ല.
I have no taste for this.
3rd. Verbs signifying to show, provided തരുന്നു, or കൊടുക്കുന്നു is added to the principal verb; to give, to happen, to instruct, to help, and to grant require a dative; as,
അവൻ ഇനിക്ക അത കാട്ടിതന്നു
He showed it me.
ഞാൻ നിനക്ക ൟ പുസ്തകം തരും.
I will give you this book.
അവൻ ആ കുതിരയെ അവന്ന കൊടുത്തു.
He gave him that horse.
ൟ കാൎയ്യങ്ങളൊക്കയും നിന്റെ മഹത്വത്തിന്നും ഞങ്ങ
ളുടെ നന്മെക്കുമായിട്ട സംഭവിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.
All these things happened for thy glory and our good.
അവൻ അവന്ന ഉപദെശിച്ചു.
He instructed him.
അവർ നിനക്ക സഹായിക്കും.
They will assist you.
അവൻ അവന അത നല്കി.
He granted him that.
4th. The verb പൊകുന്നു when signifying to go to any place requires a dative: but in some instances the ablative ending in ത്ത or ഇൽ is used; as,
അവൻ കൊച്ചീക്ക പൊകുന്നു.
He is going to Cochin.
അവൾ ആലപ്പുഴെക്ക പൊയി.
She went to Aleppie.
അവർ ചെങ്ങന്നൂൎക്ക പൊകും.
They will go to Chenganoor.
ഞാൻ തിരുവനതപുരത്ത പൊയി.
I went to Trevandrum.
പൈതൽ വീട്ടിൽ പൊകുന്നു.
The child is going home.
5th. The following verbs require their subject to be in the dative case.
ഇനിക്ക വിശക്കുന്നു I am hungry.
„ ദാഹിക്കുന്നു, „ „ thirsty.
„ വിയൎക്കുന്നു, „ perspire.
„ തൊന്നുന്നു, „ think.
„ കിട്ടുന്നു, „ gain.
6th. ഉണ്ട and വരുന്നു, when used for ഉണ്ട together with their negatives; വെണം വെണ്ടി, and their negatives; when signifying need, require a dative of the person; but ഉണ്ട signifying to exist, or to be in any place, takes a nominative of the person; as,
അവൻ ഉണ്ട, He is alive.
അവൻ അവിടെ ഉണ്ട, He is there.
ൟ ചരക്കിന്ന ചെതം ഉണ്ടാകും, or വരും.
This merchandise will sustain loss, lit. there mill be loss, or loss will come to this merchandise.
ൟ പൈതലിന്ന ദീനം ഉണ്ടാകയില്ല or വരികയില്ല.
This child will not fall sick.
ഇതിനാൽ ഇനിക്ക ലാഭം ഉണ്ട. I gain by this.
ഇനിക്ക സങ്കടമില്ല. I have no complaint.
അത ഇനിക്ക വെണം. I want that.
ഇത ഇനിക്ക വെണ്ടാ. I do not want this.
7th. The defective negative verbs, together with കഴിയും require a dative of the person, and are used in sentences thus,
അവൾക്ക അത ചെയ്തുകൂടാ. She cannot do that.
ഇനിക്ക പൊകുവാൻ വഹിയ. I cannot go.
അവന്ന വരുവാൻ മെല. He cannot come.
അവൎക്ക പറവാൻ കഴിയും. They can tell.
നമുക്ക കെൾപ്പാൻ കഴികയില്ല. I cannot hear.
