107 VERBAL PARTICIPLES.

222. The Malayalim words made with കൊണ്ട affixed to past participles or the past tenses of verbs, may be rendered into English by the words seeing, hearing, &c., in such sentences as he remained in the house doing his work; thus,
അവൻ സിംഹത്തെ നൊക്കി കൊണ്ട അവിടെ ഇരുന്നു.
He sat there looking at the Lion.
അവൻ അവനൊട സംസാരിച്ചും കൊണ്ട ആ സ്ഥലത്ത നിന്നു.
He stood at that place talking with him.
അവർ കാട്ടാനകളെ കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടും ഭയങ്കരമായ ശബ്ദം കെട്ടുകൊണ്ടും ഒടിപൊയി.
They seeing wild Elephants and hearing a noise fled away.
It has been shown, in para 214, that when a number of verbs occur in the same sentence, all but the last are put in the past participle; but to be construed as verbs of the same tense as the final verb. It is however to be noted here, that sometimes the preceding verbal participle may refer to a past action, and be construed as a participle while the final verb may be in any tense; thus,
അവൻ വഴി നടന്ന ക്ഷീണമായി കിടക്കുന്നു.
He having walked is lying down, faint.
This form however, though used, is inelegant. In such cases ഇട്ട should be added to the participle, which in this connexion denotes completeness. Sometimes ആറെ is added instead of ഇട്ട; thus,
ഞാൻ അപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞിട്ട അവന്ന പത്ത ചക്രം കൊടുത്തു.
Having spoken thus I gave him ten chuckrums.
തൊട്ടത്തിൽ ചെന്ന വൃക്ഷങ്ങളെ വെട്ടീട്ട അവൻ വീട്ടിൽ പൊയി.
After having gone to the garden and cut down the trees, he went home.
ഇത തീൎത്തിട്ട ഞാൻ അവിടെ പൊകാം.
After having finished this, I will go there.
ഞാൻ അവിടെ ചെന്നാറെ അവനെ കണ്ടില്ല.
When I went there, I did not see him.
ആ പശുവിനെ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന കറന്നാറെ വെണ്ടുവൊളം പാല കിട്ടി.
After having brought the cow and milked her, I got an abundance of milk.
