040 FORMATION OF THE PAST TENSE.

94. The simple past tense is formed from the present; thus,
1st. Verbs whose present tense ends in ക്കുന്നു, preceded ഇ, or എ, form the past by dropping ക്കുന്നു and adding ച്ചു; as,
PRESENT. PAST.
അടിക്കുന്നു, അടിച്ചു, to strike.
ചിരിക്കുന്നു, ചിരിച്ചു, to laugh.
വഞ്ചിക്കുന്നു, വഞ്ചിച്ചു, to deceive.
അടെക്കുന്നു, അടെച്ചു, to shut.
വിറെക്കുന്നു, വിറെച്ചു, to tremble.
തറെക്കുന്നു, തറെച്ചു, to nail.

Exceptions.
വിക്കുന്നു, വിക്കി, to stammer.
ചിക്കുന്നു, ചിക്കി, to dry grain.
2nd. If ക്കുന്നു be preceded by ട, or റ, the past is formed by dropping ക്കുന്നു and adding ന്നു; as,
PRESENT. PAST.
കിടക്കുന്നു, കിടന്നു, to lie down.
നടക്കുന്നു, നടന്നു, to walk.
കടക്കുന്നു, കടന്നു, to pass over.
തുറക്കുന്നു, തുറന്നു, to open.
പറക്കുന്നു, പറന്നു, to fly.
മറക്കുന്നു, മറന്നു, to forget.

Exceptions.
PRESENT. PAST.
ഉറക്കുന്നു, ഉറച്ചു, to strengthen.
അറുക്കുന്നു, അറുത്തു, to saw.
3rd. Verbs whose present tense terminates in ൎക്കുന്നു preceeded by a long vowel, or by ഉക്കുന്നു, for the most part, make the past in ൎത്തു or ഉത്തു; as,
PRESENT. PAST.
തീൎക്കുന്നു, തീൎത്തു, to finish.
വാൎക്കുന്നു. വാൎത്തു, to found, cast.
പാൎക്കുന്നു. പാൎത്തു, to dwell.
കൊടുക്കുന്നു. കൊടുത്തു, to give.
എടുക്കുന്നു. എടുത്തു, to take.
അടുക്കുന്നു. അടുത്തു, to approach.
4th. Verbs that have ൾ or ൽ before ക്കുന്നു make the past in ട്ടു or റ്റു; as,
PRESENT. PAST.
കെൾക്കുന്നു, കെട്ടു, to hear.
വെൾക്കുന്നു. വെട്ടു, to marry.
നൊല്ക്കുന്നു, നൊറ്റു, to fast.
വില്ക്കുന്നു. വിറ്റു, to sell.
Exception.
നില്ക്കുന്നു, നിന്നു, to stand.
5th. When the present ends in കുന്നു, ങ്ങുന്നു, and their causuals; or in ക്കുന്നു, ട്ടുന്നു, തുന്നു, ത്തുന്നു, ണുന്നു, റ്റുന്നു, പ്പുന്നു, ന്നു ന്നു, or ള്ളുന്നു; the past is formed by omitting the ഉന്നു of the present, and adding ഇ.
Verbs whose present ends in ടുന്നു, രുന്നു, റുന്നു, and ളുന്നു, when preceeded by a long vowel, follow the same rule; as,
PRESENT. PAST.
ഉരുകുന്നു, ഉരുകി, to dissolve.
ഉരുക്കുന്നു, ഉരുക്കി, to cause to melt.
കൂകുന്നു, കൂകി, to crow, as a cock.
ആക്കുന്നു, ആക്കി, to make.
തൂക്കുന്നു, തൂക്കി, to hang.
മുങ്ങുന്നു, മുക്കി, to sink.


Exceptions.

6th. Verbs whose present tense ends in രുന്നു, preceeded by a short vowel, make the past in ൎന്നു, or ന്നു; those ending in യുന്നു, make ഞ്ഞു; and those in യ്യുന്നു, യ്തു; as,

7th. Verbs whose present ends in ടുന്നു, preceeded by a short vowel, make their past in ട്ടു; as,
