111 PASSIVE VERBS.

226. When simple sentences formed by a nominative case, active verb, and an objective, are rendered by the passive form, the agent is put into the 1st ablative and the object into the nominative case; as,
അവൻ എന്നെ അടിച്ചു. He beat me.
അവനാൽ ഞാൻ അടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു . I was beaten by him.
അവനാൽ അത കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. It was slain by him.
In sentences where other nouns are used, such nouns must be placed in the same cases, as if used with active or neuter verbs; thus,
താൻ സത്യം പറഞ്ഞാൽ ആ കുറ്റം തന്നൊട ക്ഷമിക്കപ്പെടും.
If you speak truth you will be forgiven that fault.
അവനാൽ ൟ ആളിനൊട പറയപ്പെട്ട ഗുണദൊഷം നല്ലതാകുന്നു.
The advice, that was given by him to this person, is good.
അവന്റെ വീട്ട വസ്തുക്കൾ എല്ലാം അപഹരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
The whole of his household furniture was taken away by force.
നിനക്ക ഗുണം ചെയ്യുന്നവൻ ദൈവത്താൽ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടവനായിരിക്കട്ടെ.
May he who doeth you good, be blessed by God.
36 The Malayalim verb പൊകുന്നു to go, is only used in the neuter; when therefore any of the English words compounded with to go are to be rendered into Malayalim, other verbs must be used; as,
അവൻ അവനെ വിട്ടയച്ചു.
He let him go; lit: he dismissed and sent him, as from confinement, &c.
അവൻ ആ ആളിനെ പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.
He made that person go; lit: he told and sent.
When two or more passive verbs occur in the same sentence, the rules for placing them is the same as in the active voice; thus,
ൟ പശു വില്ക്കപ്പെട്ട അതിന്റെ വില ദാരിദ്ര്യക്കാൎക്ക കൊടുക്കപ്പെടുവാനുള്ളതായിരുന്നു.
This cow ought to have been sold, and its price given to the poor.
അവിടെ ചെന്നാൽ താൻ അടിക്കപ്പെട്ട കൊല്ലപ്പെടും.
If you go there, you will be beaten and killed.
Passive verbs may be placed in connexion with other verbs; but in most cases it is better to make separate sentences, or to put the passive verb into the active form;
അവൻ ആ സ്ത്രിയെ കൊന്നത കൊണ്ട തൂക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
He was hanged, because he killed that woman.
അവൻ പാമ്പിനാൽ കടിക്കപ്പെട്ട പത്ത ദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പൊൾ മരിച്ച പൊയി.
He died ten days after he had been bitten by a serpent.
ക്രിസ്തു സ്വൎഗ്ഗത്തിൽനിന്ന ഇറങ്ങി മനുഷ്യനായി തീൎന്ന നമുക്ക വെണ്ടി കുരിശിൽ തറെക്കപ്പെട്ട മരിച്ചു.
Christ came down from heaven, became man, was crucified and died or us.
