100 OF THE PRESENT TENSE.

215. This tense is used,
1st. To represent present time as,
ഞാൻ അവളെ സ്നെഹിക്കുന്നു; or, ഞാൻ അവളെ സ്നെഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട.
I love her; or, am loving her.
യജമാനൻ അവനൊട സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.
The master is conversing with him.
അവൻ പൊകുന്നു. He is going.
2nd. When in Malayalim replies are made to such questions as, what is he doing, കൊണ്ട must be added to the past tense of the principal verb, and if the answer refers to some business that requires the standing posture, the present tense of the verb നില്ക്കുന്നു to stand, ought to be added to കൊണ്ട; as,
അവൻ എന്ത എടുക്കുന്നു? What is he doing?
അവൻ കിളച്ചുകൊണ്ട നില്ക്കുന്നു.
He is digging; lit: he stands digging.
അവർ വെറക വെട്ടി കൊണ്ട നില്ക്കുന്നു.
They are cutting fire wood.
If the business requires the sitting posture, the present progressive form is used; as,
അവൻ നെയ്തകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. He is weaving.
3rd. മാറ, annexed to verbs, qualifies them thus,
1st. When affixed to the future tense of a principal verb with ആകുന്നു, or, more commonly ആയി or ഉം added to it, the meaning is preparation for any thing; as,
അവൻ അത ചെയ്യുമാറായി.
He is prepared to do that.
The usual form in which witnesses, in courts of justice, close their written evidence is thus,
ഇതിന്റെ ഭെദം വന്നാൽ കല്പന്റെ പൊലെ കെട്ടുകൊള്ളുമാറും സമ്മതിച്ച ഇന്ത കച്ചിട്ട എഴുതി വെച്ച രാമൻ രാമൻ.
The Kychet which Ramen wrote and placed (in court,) acknowledging that, if any discrepancy should be found in his evidence, he is prepared to receive punishment. lit. If there should be any difference in this, he is prepared to hear what is commanded.
2nd. മാറാകുന്നു or ആയി, affixed to the infinitive signifies being on the point of doing any thing; as,
അവൻ മരിപ്പാറായി.
He is upon the point of death.
അവൻ ഇത ചെയ്വാറായിരിക്കുന്നു.
He is upon the point of doing this.
ഇത് തിരുവാറായി.
This is just about finished.
വള്ളം മുങ്ങുവാറായിരിക്കുന്നു.
The Boat is upon the point of sinking.
3rd. When ഉണ്ട is added to മാറ, and both affixed to the infinitive
the meaning is habit; as,
അവൻ വരുവാറുണ്ട. He is in the habit of coming.
അവൻ ആ പൈതലിനെ അടിപ്പാറുണ്ട.
He is frequently beating that child.
വരുന്നു added to the past tense of a principal verb gives the same meaning; as,
ഞാൻ ദിവസം തൊറും ഇത ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു.
I am in the daily habit of doing this.
4th. The present tense is used when, in relating past events, the verb serves to point out some circumstance as existing or happening at the time referred to by the past tense; as,
അവർ നൊക്കി എട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന കണ്ടപ്പൊൾ അവന്ന രണ്ട കൊടുത്തു.
When they looked and saw that there were, lit: are, eight, they gave him two.
രാജാവ വരുന്നു എന്ന കെട്ടപ്പൊൾ അവൻ അവനെ എതിരെല്പാനായിട്ട ചെന്നു.
When he heard that the king was, lit: is coming he went to meet him.
വെള്ളം പൊങ്ങുന്നു എന്ന കാവൽക്കാർ അവനൊട പറഞ്ഞപ്പൊൾ തന്റെ കൃഷി നശിച്ചപൊകും എന്ന വെച്ച അവൻ അവിടെ പൊയി.
When the watchmen told him that the water was, lit: is, rising, he went there supposing his crop would be destroyed.
അത അപ്രകാരം ആകുന്നു എന്ന അവർ അറിയിച്ചപ്പൊൾ അവൻ മിണ്ടാതെ ഇരുന്നു.
When they declared that it was, lit: is, so he was speechless.
