078 OF THE COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE DEGREES.- OF THE FORMATION OF THE COMPARATIVE DEGREE.

130. The comparative is formed thus,
1st. By the help of the particle കാൾ or കാളും, which is affixed to the accusative case of nouns; or the ablative ending in ഇൽ, or ഇലും is used without any adjunct. The person, or thing compared is put in the nominative, unless the final verb requires the dative case; as,
അവന്ന കൊടുക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാൾ നിനക്ക തരുന്നത നല്ലതാകുന്നു.
It is better to give it to you than to him.
അവൻ മറ്റവനെക്കാൾ നല്ലവനാകുന്നു.
He is better than the other.
ൟ കുതിര അതിനെക്കാൾ വെളുത്തതാകുന്നു.
This horse is whiter than that.
ആ വൃക്ഷം ഇതിലും ഉയരമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.
That tree is higher than this.
These forms are sometimes qualified by particles; thus,
അവൻ തന്റെ മക്കളെക്കാളും അധികം ബുദ്ധിയുള്ളവനാകുന്നു.
He is wiser, lit. more wise, than his Children.
ബിംബങ്ങളെ തൊഴുന്നതിനെക്കാൾ ഒരു പട്ടിയെ വന്ദിക്കുന്നത എത്രയും നല്ലതാകുന്നു?
How much better is it to worship a dog; than to bow to Idols?
ൟ പശു അതിനെക്കാൾ എറെ വിശെഷപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
This cow is more excellent than that.
2nd. Sometimes the comparative is formed by means of adverbs, or the particle ഒളും, affixed to the nominative or dative case of a noun; as,
ഇത ചെയ്യുന്നതിന്ന എറ്റം എളുപ്പമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.
It is easier to do this.
ഇവന്ന മറ്റവനൊളും ശക്തിയില്ല.
He hath less strength than the other.
