101 PAST TENSES.

216. The manner of using these tenses, has been already so fully described, as to render it unnecessary to do more than to give a few examples of each form; thus,
വൈക്കത്തെ സദ്യക്ക എലവെപ്പറായി എന്ന കെട്ടപ്പൊൾ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ നീന്തി അക്കര കടപ്പാനായിട്ട കായലിൽ ചാടി കുടിച്ച ചത്തു.
When a Brahmin heard that they were about placing the leaves for the feast at Wykem, he jumped into the Back-water in order to swim over and was drowned, lit: drank and died.
This refers to the story of a Brahmin, who, fearing he might be too late for his rice if he waited for a Boat, jumped into the water and was drowned. By the leaves are meant plantain leaves which they use as plates.
അത് പുല്ല പുഷ്പങ്ങളുടെ മെൽ മഞ്ഞ പെയ്യുന്ന സമയത്തായിരുന്നു.
It was at the time when dew was falling upon the grass and flowers.
എന്റെ അപ്പൻ മരിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത ഞാൻ കൊഴിക്കൊട്ട ആയിരുന്നു.
I was at Calicut at the time of my fathers death.
അവർ ഭക്ഷണത്തിന്ന പൊകുമ്പൊൾ ഞാൻ ആട്ടം കണ്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
While they were going to eat, I was looking at the dance.
അവൻ ഇനിക്ക ഒരു കുതിരയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട.
He hath sent me a horse.
ഞാൻ എറ നാളായിട്ട അവന്റെ വരവിനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
I have waited his coming for many days.
ഞാൻ അവിടെക്ക പൊകുവാൻ നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
I have resolved to go thither.
അവന്റെ കാൎയ്യത്തെ കുറിച്ച പലപ്പൊഴും ഞാൻ കെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
I had often heard of his business.
അവൾക്ക ചെറുതായിട്ട ഒരു തൊട്ടം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
She had a small garden.
രാജാവ ഇവിടെ വരുമെന്ന മുമ്പിൽ കെട്ടിരുന്നു ഇപ്പൊൾ ഒന്നും കെൾക്കുന്നില്ല താനും.
I had before heard that the king would come but now I hear nothing (about it.)
If ആയിരിക്കും be added to the perfect tense, it denotes uncertainty; as,
അവൻ അപ്രകാരം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടായിരിക്കും.
Perhaps he has done so.
