014 GENDER.

41. The genders are Masculine, Feminine, Common, and Neuter.
42. The names of men, and those denoting the male sex of Heathen Deities, are of the masculine gender; as, മനുഷ്യൻ, Man; ദെവെന്ദ്രൻ, Deywendren; വരുണൻ, Wărunen.
43. Names denoting the female sex of the human race and Heathen Deities, are of the feminine gender, as, ഭാൎയ്യ, Wife, ഇന്ദ്രാണി, Indrāney.
44. Names signifying both male and female of the same species are of the common gender When pronouns are used in reference to nouns of this kind, they must be of the gender to which the noun individually considered belongs; as,
ആ പൈതൽ ഇവിടെ വന്നു; പിന്നെ, അവൻ, or അവൾ, പൊകയും ചെയ്തു.
That child came here, afterwards, he or she, according to the sex, went away. ; as, പൈതൽ Child; കൊഴി, Fowl; വെലക്കാർ Work people.
45. All other nouns are of the neuter gender; as, പശു, Cow; വൃക്ഷം, Tree; കല്ല, Stone; നന്മ, Goodness.
46. Nouns ending in ൻ, are, for the most part, of the masculine gender; as, വിദ്വാൻ, A learned man; പുത്രൻ, A son.
47. Nouns ending in ആ, ഇ, and ൟ, are generally of the feminine gender; as, കന്യകാ, Virgin; ഭഗവതി, Bagawaty; സ്ത്രീ, Woman.
48. Nouns ending ം are always of the neuter gender; as, വചനം, Word; അപ്പം, Bread; പാളയം, Camp.
49. The male and female of the same species are, sometimes, represented by a different word; as,
പൊത്ത, A he buffalo. എരുമ, A she buffalo
കാള, A bull. പശു, A cow.

50. Sometimes the genders are distinguished by prefixing a particle to the noun significative of male or female; as,
ആണ്പൈതൽ, Boy. പെണ്പൈതൽ, Girl.
പൂവൻകൊഴി, Cock. പെടക്കൊഴി, Hen.
